The missionaries of Kolkata, India have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the roots of the Missionaries of Charity. As Mother Teresa herself did when starting her mission, students can also serve the sick and dying rescued from the streets of Kolkata in the mission homes of Nirmal Hriday (commonly known as Kalighat) and Prem Dan. Students have the honor of grooming these patients, helping to alleviate discomfort, and offering companionship. There are also homes for little ones in need where students engage these children in games and exercises, and assist them with their schoolwork. The small acts of loving service towards Kolkata’s poorest of the poor is fueled by Mass and prayer before the Eucharist each day with the Missionaries of Charity. The missionaries lodge with other volunteers only a five-minute walk from the Mother House, where they get to pray at Mother’s tomb and meet the current Superior General of the MC’s, Sister. Prema.
